Abstract

Stage lighting design in concerts are being transformed along the development of innovative advanced technologies. Drone technology and its potential practices are continuously examined. Adopting drone light shows in concerts is becoming the trend. The purpose of this research is to explore the potential of drone light show application in concerts. This paper will investigate the differences between stage lighting and drone light show in five main perspectives. Subjects who had experience watching drone light shows in concerts are recruited for survey and in-depth interview to gain insight of their experiences. Findings from the research show that contextual communication, large scale drone formation and dynamic movement of drone lights are the most impactful stimulus on enriching audiences’ emotional experience. Positive expectations on the adoption of interactive drone light shows in concerts is also recorded. Project: The Dronetic Moment is designed based on the findings. Three themes are formed by integrating the literatures related to colour, motion, music and emotion, and the research results. Drone light show simulations are created for each theme in two versions, a coloured video version and a black and white VR (Virtual Reality) version. At the end, design guidelines, expected results and future research are suggested.
