Abstract

How we conceive of design research has changed significantly. Scholars have explored this topic from the perspectives of the boundaries of the influence of the design profession and the shift of design paradigms. However, research on the evolution and features of design research in China has yet to make its mark on the international design research stage. Based on the National Social Science Foundation Art Project's promotion of Chinese design research, an "Object-Paradigm" analysis framework is constructed, revealing an interactive relationship between objects and paradigms of Chinese design research: a well-defined research paradigm focuses on a particular object, and specific object exists precise research paradigms. The study identifies three typical models of Chinese design research: "Things - Research On Design," "Symbols - Research On Design," and "System - Frame Creation Research." These models demonstrate a shift in focus from form to value, emphasizing the emergence of design value in society.
