Abstract
Bacto-Collaborative Design introduces an incipient design concept where interspecies collaboration results in field-specific material deliverables focusing on fashion contexts, by investigating current biodesign landscapes and aligning these elements with fashion design cycles. Bacto-Collaborative Design refers to the intersection between the aggregate design approach and specific phases of the design timeline, where biodesigned fashion outputs develop performance, aesthetic and practice dimensionalities. The multifaceted biofabrication framework contextualising Bacto-Collaborative Design was built by intersecting an adapted fashion design timeline based on bacterial growth with the complex approach through which bacterial-made materials can be actively designed employing interspecies collaboration initiatives. The elements of this aggregate approach were determined by reviewing case studies contextualised within the proposed design timeline, and analysing design objectives, methods and stakeholders, and ultimately categorising findings across levels and tiers according to non-human autonomy throughout the fabrication process and result. As an early biodesign framework, Bacto-Collaborative Design represents a first step towards categorising parameters tied to fashion outcomes, facilitating the identification of relevant tools, methodologies and motivations investigating quantitative and qualitative aspects of BC-based fashion artefacts.
