Abstract

This study explored the role of participatory design in empowering peri-urban communities through sustainable agricultural practices. Focusing on Kampung Bukatanah, West Bandung Regency, the participatory design workshop engaged diverse actors, including community members, youth organizations, and students, to address agricultural waste challenges using Solution Mapping Tools, such as cards, canvases, and guides. Participants collaboratively identified and refined solutions, such as organic fertilizer production, succulent farming, and creative tourism. The findings emphasize how participatory design fosters creative confidence, equitable power distribution, and optimism about resource utilization. This case illustrates how participatory design fosters creative confidence, equitable power distribution, and optimism about resource utilization. This study underscores the transformative potential of grassroots innovation and demonstrates how design can address complex socio- environmental issues in peri-urban settings. Through iterative mapping and envisioning, the approach catalyzes social innovation, demonstrating the transformative role of participatory design in sustainability initiatives in peri-urban contexts.
