Abstract
The communities of knowledge and practice have faced challenges in understanding the emotion- driven, nonlinear travel behaviours of Generation Z (Gen Z) travellers when developing smart tourism design solutions. To tackle this issue, our study conducted fourteen in-depth interviews with Gen Z participants, revealing a “privacy-expression paradox.” Gen Z travellers are eager to showcase their personal travel experiences creatively; however, they also wish to maintain privacy boundaries within their generation. Based on this insight, we developed a “spatial narrative framework” with three design features: spatial-emotional narrative, user-calibrated disclosure, and emotion abstraction, using Spatial Narrative Theory as our theoretical foundation. To validate this framework, we implemented "MEMORY SPACE" as an AI-powered spatial narrative tourism design prototype for Gen Z. Throughout this, our research makes two contributions. First, it theoretically proposes a “spatial narrative framework” that aligns with Gen Z’s needs for documenting and sharing. Second, it practically introduces “artistic memory expression” as an innovative privacy-preserving paradigm for smart tourism design applications for Gen Z.
