Abstract
As cycling becomes increasingly popular in urban environments due to environmental awareness and lifestyle changes, the emoAonal quality of the cycling experience has emerged as an important factor in route planning. This study inves Agates the influence of greenery and road configura Aon on cyclists’ emoAonal experiences in urban environments, uAlizing the Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance (PAD) model to assess emoAonal responses. We examine how greenery levels (no trees, moderate trees, many trees) and road configura Aons (dedicated bike lane, shared with pedestrians, shared with vehicles) influence cyclists’ emoAonal responses. A photo-based survey was conducted with 90 par Acipants in Taipei, Taiwan to assess their feelings. Findings reveal that both greenery and road type significantly impact emoAonal experiences, with dedicated bike lanes and abundant greenery yielding the highest levels of pleasure, arousal, and dominance. A significant interac Aon between greenery and road type was observed for pleasure and arousal, indicaAng that the posiAve effects of greenery are amplified in safer road condiAons. These results demonstrate the importance of integra Ang green spaces with segregated cycling infrastructure to enhance cyclists’ well-being and promote sustainable urban mobility. These findings support the development of mobile applica Aons that recommend cycling routes based on users’ emoAonal preferences. In addiAon, the study offers valuable guidance for urban planners to create greener, safer, and more emo Aonally supporAve cycling environments.
