Abstract
What future challenges and opportunities might AI bring to art and design education, and how can the educational system best be prepared? In a changing society, rapid technological developments can change the need for competences. An example of rapidly evolving technology is artificial intelligence, here limited to text-to-image generation. This is technology where you can write a text to generate an image in a digital system that is trained by large amounts of image and text combinations. Towards an unknown future with constantly new technological innovations, we should have an open but critical look at the opportunities and challenges that lies within this new technology. In this context we reflect on the possible future creative learning opportunities that this technology can contribute to. We conducted future scenario workshops with art, design, and media teachers, aiming to explore the potential future challenges that AI may bring to art and design education. Based on an analysis of the empirical data from the workshops, three different scenarios were developed. These scenarios were then drafted into three narratives, visualising what future art and design education might look like. Through the development of the narratives, four important key points were identified: 1) Transparent and ethical technology, 2) Engaged students and the importance of critical thinking and problem-solving, 3) A need for practical experience, knowledge and insight, and 4) Leveraging the opportunities AI presents. These results are the basis for a final discussion on how the educational system can best be prepared for a future with AI-technology.
