Recording: Drawing Machine Demonstration and Building Construction
Unknown
This recording contains two presentations that took place at the 1962 Conference on Design Methods. First, the demonstration of a drawing machine and second, a presentation on building construction.
The demonstration of the drawing machine begins at 09.00 and ends at 34.00 when members were invited to view the machine. At 54.25 the second presentation begins and ends at 02.26.13 where discussion then begins.
Neither of these presentations appear in the conference proceedings. If you have more information about who gave these presentations at the conference, please get in touch at editor@designresearchsociety.org.
The Design Research Society is very pleased to make available a variety of archival materials from the 1962 Conference on Design Methods, including the published proceedings and six recordings of paper presentations and panel discussions.
The 1962 conference was held from 19 to 21 September at the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College, London. It was organised by a committee of ten individuals:
• Chairman: Professor John Page, professor of building science, Sheffield University
• Secretary: Peter Slann, lecturer in aeronautical design at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London
• Treasurer: Frank Height, Royal College of Art
• Bruce Archer, Royal College of Art
• Peter Booker, Institute of Engineering Designers
• Roger Coleman, art critic, graphic artist and co-organizer of the Situation Exhibition in 1960
• Peter Cowan, Bartlett School of Architecture
• Anthony Froshaug, graphic artist and theorist, Hochschule für Gestaltung, Ulm and Royal College of Art
• Christopher Jones, lecturer in industrial design, Manchester College of Science and Technology
• Denis Thornley, senior lecturer, Department of Architecture, Manchester University and visiting lecturer at the Hochschule für Gestaltung at Ulm
The Design Research Society was formed, along with other members, from this committee.
The proceedings, Conference on Design Methods: papers presented at the conference on systematic and intuitive methods in engineering, industrial design, architecture and communications, London, September 1962, were edited by John Christopher Jones and Denis Thornley and published by Pergamon Press (Oxford, London, New York and Paris) in 1963. The proceedings contain a collection of papers presented at the conference as well as transcriptions of the recorded introductions to group discussions.
The archival material also includes live recordings of six presentations. The recordings were self-financed, and the quality of the recordings is sometimes poor. We have provided transcripts alongside the recordings, which were generated using AI and edited by hand. Due to the quality of the recording, there are areas where speech is unintelligible. These areas have been indicated using brackets and a question mark [as in this example?] and/or by yellow highlighting. If you notice an error in the transcript you would like to correct, please contact us at dl@designresearchsociety.org. Please note that for paper presentations, only the presentations have been transcribed, though the recording contains discussion following the presentation.
Three of the recordings are of presentations included in the proceedings: Robyn Denny presenting his paper ‘The Creative Process’, E. F. Doherty presenting his paper ‘Psychological Aspects of the Creative Act’, and John Page’s summarising remarks. In addition, there is a recording of a panel discussion and a recording containing two presentations that took place at the 1962 Conference on Design Methods. First, the demonstration of a drawing machine and second, a presentation on building construction. Neither of these presentations appear in the conference proceedings. If you have more information about who gave these presentations at the conference, please get in touch at editor@designresearchsociety.org. Further, there is a recording of the first, preliminary DRS committee meeting held at conference.
The collection of archival material relating to the Design Research Society is an ongoing project of the DRS. Should you have any questions about the material included here, or if you have archival material relating to the DRS that you think should be made publicly available, do reach out to us at editor@designresearchsociety.org.
