Proceedings of the 3rd Conference of Doctoral Education in Design (2003)
David Durling and Kazuo Sugiyama
The 3rd conference on 'Doctoral Education in Design' was hosted by several Asian design societies in partnership with the Design Research Society, and was held in parallel with the 6th Asian Design Conference, in Tsukuba, Japan, in October 2003. The call for papers stressed an overriding theme of the 'Practice of Research'. We were particularly interested in identifying best practice, and the practical application of best practice, with a focus on organising and teaching the doctorate in design.

Proceedings of the Design Research Society International Conference, 2002: Common Ground
David Durling and John Shackleton
The theme for the 2002 DRS conference was 'Common Ground'. The aim was to bring together many of the sub disciplines and sub-groups of the design research community - to present current work, to explore areas of common interest, to connect, to argue, to integrate, and to celebrate both the commonality and the diversity of our shared interests and strengths. The larger purpose is to take a significant step forward and endorse the new maturity of our international, interdisciplinary community.

Proceedings of the 2nd Conference of Doctoral Education in Design (2000): Foundations for the Future
David Durling and Ken Friedman
The La Clusaz conference focused on four central themes:
1 philosophies and theories of design
2 foundations and methods of design research
3 form and structure for the doctorate in design
4 the relationship between practice and research in design
Participants presented findings, debated ideas, proposed benchmarks for the future development of the doctorate in design, and entered into dialogue on how to develop programs. The conference encouraged participants to interact, using each session as a genuine opportunity to confer. One important goal of the conference was establishing significant working relationships, research alliances, and partnerships among universities.

Proceedings of the 1st Conference on Doctoral Education in Design (1998)
Richard Buchanan, Dennis P Doordan, Lorraine Justice, and Victor Margolin
The 1st Doctoral Education in Design Conference brought people from diverse institutions and situations together to discuss a common concern: doctoral education in design. Participants from nineteen countries assembled on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus,Ohio for a conference sponsored by The Ohio State University Department of Industrial, Interior, and Visual Communication Design, the Carnegie Mellon University School of Design, and academic journal Design Issues. Speakers described educational efforts shaped by diverse motivations, resources, histories, and student constituencies.

Proceedings of the Design Research Society International Conference, 1976: Changing Design
Barrie Evans, James Powell, and Reg Talbot
The DRS 1976 conference was held in Portsmouth. The proceedings were published by John Wiley in 1982. The following text is taken from the book cover:
Both the role and nature of design are changing. Developments within design and from society generally are leading to new opportunities for those traditionally outside the 'design community' to influence, in a creative way, what is designed. This changing scene and the novelty of many major design problems are altering the nature, and more especially the complexity, of designing. Awareness of potential major side effects of designs, both social and physical-such as pollution-, are adding a new dimension...

Proceedings of the Design Research Society International Conference, 1980: Design: Science: Method
Robin Jacques and James Powell
The 1980 DRS Conference proceedings were published IPS Business Press Ltd. The following text is from the introduction of the printed volume:
The 1980 Conference of the Design Reserach Society (DRS) sought to explore further the relationships between design, science and method. In choosing this theme I was aware that as terms their meanings are anything but clear, and the relationships between them even less so. Both science and method have played a large part in design thinking over the past two decades or so, but to many the field is characterised by the arguments of the early years. Method has been, since the 1950's, the focus of the debate among design theorists about the nature of design and its processes. The antagonists have seen design 'method' 'methods' and 'methodology' as variously mechanistic, over-simplistic, joyless, or as denying the essentially creative nature of design.

Proceedings of the Design Research Society International Conference, 1973: The Design Activity
Tom Maver
The 1973 Design Research Society Conference was held jointly with the US Design Methods Group on 29-31 August 1973 at The Polytechnic of Central London. Papers were circulated as preprints before the conference. This volume is the list of those papers which are contained in five further volumes organised around the themes of the conference.

Proceedings of the Design Research Society International Conference, 1971: Design Participation
Nigel Cross
To explore the possibilities and problems of user participation in design the Design Research Society sponsored an international conference on Design Participation, in September 1971, which brought together a wide range of people whose interests overlap in this area. Topics covered by speakers at the conference included social technology, consumer interests, participation in planning, adaptable environments, design methods and computer aids for participatory design.
The Design Research Society has been publishing bound volumes of its conferences since 1971, collecting together an historic record of the development of design research and design thinking.
