"FUTUREGROUND featured leading-edge design research from the international research community. Supporting the central theme was discourse around design as both cultural activity and production, mapping the discipline's development, and research in an industrial context. Particular emphasis was placed on the opportunities this presents for reconsidering the nature of design and an exploration of the scope for future research. The conference aimed to debate directions emerging from design research around the world, covering such topics as education, process/methods, interaction, practice/management, sustainability, culture philosophy and theory among many others. FUTUREGROUND was an important contribution to the evolution of design research and can be seen as the DRS Conference at which the contribution of studio-based research was acknowledged both alongside the DRS' traditional research foci and as central to research in the discipline of design."
